EASTER THOUGHTS: Leading an organization called
"Toxics Information Project can be a challenge in many ways.
Not the least is the inherent negativity of the word, "toxic".
I try to balance this, by always including helpful information
on how to avoid the "bad guys" and find the healthier ones.
I also point out to folks that our bodies are amazingly good
at detoxifying themselves, and keeping us healthy despite
much nasty stuff in our environment (within limits).
However, this morning another thought came to me. I had
watched a movie last night with a heavy dose of negative
interaction –power struggle, suffering, a lot of anger, even
hate, & killing portrayed.
I am now musing about the fact that it is not merely chemicals
that are toxic - the thoughts and feelings we have in relationship
to others --can be so negative as to be truly as unhealthy as
exposure to phthalates, BP-A or even pesticides. When people
feel the need to curse, hurt, abuse others, those are "toxic"
thoughts – as are the feelings of being abused ourselves.
I can't really address this through TIP, but it seemed appropriate
today, Easter Sunday, (with Passover sharing this "holy" week),
to make this point.
You don't have to be Christian, Jewish, or even religious to realize
that "love one another" is a lot more healthy in every way than
"us vs. them". So, Happy whatever holiday you celebrate (if none,
just have a happy day) with wishes that you will in the weeks
ahead experience the healthiness of a non-toxic thinking/feeling
atmosphere along with your fragrance-free soap & GMO-free food.
Blessings, Liberty G, TIP Director

TIP ACTIVITIES
2013 TIP TALKS DIGEST, Spring/Summer. Now available in many
RI locations (if you are here, help us distribute!) and on line at:
http://toxicsinfo.org/TIPS_house.htm
EVENTS: I plan to show one food facts film in April and another
in May, with discussions to follow. Other members of our local
Protecting Our Food Supply group are seeking similar opportunities.
To those of you who are not in Rhode Island –
I encourage you to find a local contact for the national GMO labeling
coalition, and get involved. Also, my husband and I will be traveling
across the country in June, and returning in early July. I would be
pleased to do a presentation on the way, if invited.
LABELING GAME: The name is not yet final, but the game has been
created and tried – with great success – at an environmental fair
here in RI. Children were directed to our table (and others), to
participate in an activity for which they got credit and a sticker.
When they had completed enough – ice cream! The exciting thing
to me was that, as they answered true-false and multiple choice
questions about product ingredients – and I gave them the answer
– often they and/or their parents would say: “I didn’t know that!”
A true learning experience! I will be working to improve the game
and make it available to others soon. I believe it is a valuable tool
to educate people about what’s in their food – and other products.
“TOXINS INFO PROJECT” FACEBOOK PAGE: Our food group’s
Facebook page is now up, and can be accessed at:

FRAGRANCE ALLERGIES? SOME WISE COMMENTS
FROM A TIP SUPPORTER, JOE CAREY:
Want to make a real difference? Let's stop playing the
pharmaceutical and pesticide companies and their medical
conspirator corporation's game by blaming the victim for the
misery the three create and promulgate. Let's stop using
the word "allergy",a victim's cause for the condition,
and call it what it really is, "a chemical poisoning".
Here Is A Paragraph That Seems To Side With Industry:
"Lots of people enjoy fragrance, but our new report finds that
millions (yes, literally millions!) of people are affected by skin
allergies caused by chemicals in fragrance. Unfortunately,
it’s nearly impossible for us to avoid specific fragrance allergens
because companies keep fragrance ingredients a secret."
Here Is The Reality I Want You To Publish:
Lots of people enjoy fragrance, but our new report finds that
millions (yes, literally millions!) of people are poisoned by
chemicals in fragrance that cause symptoms typical of
allergies, some life threatening. Unfortunately, it’s nearly
impossible for us to avoid being poisoned by fragrance
chemicals, many of them petrochemical products, because
companies keep fragrance ingredients a secret to prevent us
from identifying them.
Liberty, we can't fight these industries if they get us
to blame ourselves for the problems they cause.
Comments are welcome.
(Note: Send to Liberty G for forwarding)
With respect and support,
Joe Carey

TWO NEW RESOURCES FROM THE ALWAYS INFORMATIVE
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP (EWG)
LAUNDRY PODS & OTHER TIPS ON HEALTHY CLEANING:
It's no surprise that many household cleaners contain toxic chemicals
linked to asthma, cancer, skin irritation and more. What is shocking is
that for most cleaning products there is no federal law to make sure
the labels tell you what's in them! So you often have no way to find out
if your cleaners have harmful ingredients.
You have a right to know. That's why you need to check out EWG's j
ust-updated Guide to Healthy Cleaning. They've rated more than
2,000 home cleaning products on the health risks posed by their
ingredients and the transparency of their labels. They added nearly
a hundred new products, including a whole new category: laundry
pods. They've also included more information on allergens -
including botanical oils that are known to trigger allergies.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WATER FILTERS:
A glass of tap water can often contain a number of contaminants,
including known and suspected carcinogens, substances toxic
to the endocrine & nervous systems and those that may have risks to
pregnancy and development. Bottled water is wasteful, expensive and
sometimes nothing more than tap water. That's why Environmental
Working Group has just released a brand new online Water Filter
Buying Guide.
This guide will help you choose which water filters work best for the
water that comes into your home. Using the simple tool, you can
search by your preferred filter type, contaminants you want to filter
out - and more. It includes tips on how to maintain your water filters
There are a wide variety of types of filters and filter technologies
on the market. Among the most popular:
Pitchers that fit in the fridge
Easy-to-install faucet mounted filters
On-counter filtration systems with a line connected to the faucet
Under-sink filters mounted underneath the kitchen sink and
connected to the water supply line.
Common filter technologies include:
Carbon/activated carbon
Mechanical filters
Reverse osmosis
Water softeners
Use EWG's Water Filter Buying Guide to learn more about the
technologies & find the right filter for your water. Go to:
