** NOTICE ABOUT CONTACTING
TIP:
Our mail address has changed. The new address is:
P.O. Box 40572, Providence,
RI 02940.
**TWO NEWLY IMPORTANT TOPICS THIS MONTH:
About PSAS – and the actions of Federal Agencies.
1. Can You Tell Me That Tip Is “All Wet”
Today? Much of this issue relates to
safer, cleaner water – especially combating pollution from PFAS chemicals, a
serious threat to our health. And, much
more about PFAS has turned up in our news. Fortunately, some of the reports are
about positive actions, even possibly by Congress – and the great folks at EWG
are offering ways to protect ourselves from this scourge, via a new Tap Water
Database.
2. Another
Source Of PFAS Exposure? Oops, this one
isn’t water: It’s turf. Unfortunately,
the Federal Agency & often state/city responses are not protective. Parents
of soccer playing kids especially should check out the story. It is a bit long
and detailed – but includes really critical info re: health concerns.
HOTTING UP
– THE 5G CONTROVERSY IS ON FIRE! (While
the 5G installations are radiating like the crazy things they are). As with so many concerns, we need to
retrieve control over regulation on our home turf. See the action item below to resist Federal prevention of local
protective measure.
**DON’T FORGET THAT OTHER MAJOR SCOURGE: PESTICIDES!
The call
to Kroger to dump them is a Clever Consumer item today.
Blessings, Liberty G

EMF CONCERNS & INFO & ACTION
New
bills in the House and Senate will roll back FCC regulations that prevent local
communities from having input over how 5G networks get installed in their
towns. We must encourage our elected officials to support this legislation, and
more importantly, urge them to halt the expansion of 5G networks until more
safety studies are done. Write to your
members of Congress and urge them to support these important bills--and to call
for more safety testing of 5G.

TOP U.S. TOXICOLOGIST WAS BARRED FROM SAYING
PFAS CAUSE DISEASE IN HUMANS. SHE’S SAYING IT NOW.
Sharon Lerner October
21, 2019 Intercept
The widespread environmental contaminants known as PFAS cause multiple health
problems in people, according to Linda Birnbaum, who retired as director of the
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Toxicology
Program earlier this month.
The
statement may come as little surprise to those following the medical literature
on the industrial chemicals that have been used to make non-stick coatings,
fire-fighting foam, and host of other products. Thousands of scholarly articles
have linked the chemicals to at least 800 health effects. Some of the health
problems found in humans — including elevated cholesterol levels, liver
dysfunction, weight gain, reproductive problems and kidney cancer — have been
shown to increase along with the levels of the chemicals in blood.
Extensive research also shows that children with higher levels of
PFAS have weakened immune responses. Yet
while she was leading the NIEHS, a division of the National Institutes of
Health, whose mission is “to discover how the environment affects people, in
order to promote healthier lives,” Birnbaum was not allowed to use the word
“cause” when referring to the health effects from PFAS or other chemicals. Read more at:

LEGISLATION RELATED TO PFAS &
CLEAN WATER
October 18, 2019
Message from Congressman David Cicilline:
(Note: TIP is a
non-profit organization that does not provide political support to any
candidate. This note is info only about
a particular bill.) Dear
Liberty, Thank you for contacting me to
express your support for H.R. 535, the PFAS Action Act of 2019 and
increased monitoring of PFAS chemicals. You will be pleased to know
that I have asked to be added as cosponsor of this legislation.
As
you know, the PFAS Action Act would require the EPA to designate all
perfluoroakyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, chemicals often used in industry
for their ability to repel oil and water, as hazardous substances within one
year of the bill’s enactment. H.R. 535 has garnered the support
of 58 cosponsors, and was most recently referred to the House Committee on
Energy & Commerce. Also, on July 12, 2019, the National Defense
Authorization Act for FiscalYear 2020, included a provision which would
designate these chemicals as hazardous substances. H.R. 2500 passed
the House by a vote of 220-197.

ACTIONS
*******************************************************************
Manufacturers of toxic
non-stick chemicals are in hot water in the face of heightened lawmaker
scrutiny of their products, which are found in a range of household items
including cooking spray and Teflon pans.
These toxic fluorinated
chemicals, also called PFAS, have been linked to cancer and harm to the
reproductive and immune systems. PFAS contamination has been found in more than
700 communities, and more than 100
million Americans may have PFAS in their drinking water.
But the real kicker?
Companies that produce these household items have known about these health
risks for decades and have brushed reports under the rug in
order to avoid regulation. The companies behind PFAS, including
DuPont and 3M, knew as early as the 1960s that these
chemicals were toxic to humans. DuPont even tested the blood of employees for
PFAS, while 3M circulated an internal memo in 1978 underscoring the toxicity of
its products. These companies knowingly
neglected to tell people what was in their household products and, worse yet,
suppressed the scientific evidence that these chemicals were hazardous!
Democrats have announced
they plan to pursue corporate accountability.
We demand Congress hold
these companies responsible. Our health is not something to be brushed under
the rug. We refuse to jeopardize ourselves for the sake of business
interests. Sign the petition at:

WARNING: THE
OTHER THREAT FROM PFA’S:
PFAS chemicals are the chemicals du jour
- this should get people's attention. Never mind the 9 carcinogens we
know are already in the artificial turf.
How much more evidence is needed to show these fields are not safe? --

Toxic
pesticides like neonics and Monsanto’s Roundup®, are a key contributor to the
devastating decline of bees, butterflies, and songbirds. What’s worse, these pesticides
are used to grow the food we eat -- they’re harming our health and
putting kids at risk.
As
the largest traditional grocery store in the U.S., Kroger has the power to
change our toxic food system. But it’s dragging its feet. So we need your
help demanding Kroger to do more for bees, butterflies, and our health. Demand Kroger stop selling food
grown with toxic pesticides!
