LIB TALKS
*********************************************
**HOPE HAPPENS! As we look towards a New Year, we continue to deal with problems and hazards on this challenging planet. However, seeking to greet 2020 with a note of hope, similar to last month’s Thanksgiving comments, this issue of TIP TALKS will be concentrating mostly on some Good News: - it’s out there!
**THE TRUTH ABOUT MUCH OF THE BAD STUFF IS COMING
OUT.
See the info in our clever consumer section, about
potatoes and other GMOs, revealed by a former genetic engineer. And, the struggle vs. Monsanto, now Bayer,
continues with power. Though the corporate
interests are fighting back, there are now over 40,000 seeking to sue.
**THERE
ARE A HOST OF ACTIONS IN EUROPE & OTHER
COUNTRIES
TO LIMIT OR BAN A BUNCH OF POLLUTANTS.
Maybe
their governmental examples will encourage our lagging, corporate-ridden Federal
entities to make some moves. Actually,
there
are some good things being done at the state level. More on
that
in future TIP TALKS!
Note
that I don’t send you too many Federal agency petitions – that’s because there
is such a “revolving door” between lobbyists and regulators.
However,
your elected officials still have some reason to care about you – so, see the
action item directed towards Congress re; a proposed ban.
Meanwhile,
consumer power is resulting in more Non-GMO and other healthy options. Also, the more you know, the better you are
able to protect yourself. Note the EMF
suggestions in this issue. Although the
concern is complex, there are questions about which “solutions” work,
and
I am no techie expert, but the ideas in this particular source seem to be
sensible and easy – probably at least some might be helpful.
Blessings & Wishes for A Happy
& Healthier Year Ahead,
Liberty G

www.foodsafetynews.com/2019/12/eu-votes-against-renewing-chlorpyrifos-approval/
By
European officials
have voted not to renew the approvals of chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl
insecticides to control insect pests on a range of crops. Newly-appointed European Commissioner for
Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, welcomed the decision on
Chlorpyrifos. Once the European
Commission formally adopts the regulations, which is expected in January 2020,
member states must withdraw all authorizations for plant protection products
containing the active substances. A
period of grace for final storage, disposal and use of a maximum of three
months may be granted by countries. After that, such products cannot be put on
the market or used in Europe.\
https://theintercept.com/2019/12/19/pfas-chemicals-europe-phase-out/
Environmental officials from Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark
today announced a plan to restrict all PFAS compounds under Europe’s chemical
regulations framework. The announcement in Brussels came one day after the
submission of a document to the European Commission that lays out a strategy to
phase out most uses of PFAS compounds
by 2030, and one week after the commission proposed
a drinking water standard for the entire class of chemicals. The 21-page document
calls for Europe to eliminate all uses of PFAS that are not “essential” and to
approach the chemicals as a group rather than individually. The report, titled
“Elements for an EU-strategy for PFASs,” maps out a comprehensive attack on the
chemicals that have contaminated water around the world, and conveys an urgency
that has been largely lacking from the U.S. government. The document was
created in response to a request from the European Commission’s Environmental
Council in June and calls for “immediate action to cease the release and
exposure of all PFASs as far as possible” on the grounds that there are huge
health and monetary costs of not acting. It describes the chemicals that have
been used to make firefighting
foam, make-up, food packaging, and non-stick coatings, including Teflon, as
extremely mobile in soil and water and warns that “PFASs will remain in the
environment for ages.”
Today, the Dutch Court of Justice in Rotterdam came to the first conviction of the use of crumb rubber infill in a pioneering lawsuit on pollution caused by sports fields. This verdict constitutes a precedent for many similar cases in the Netherlands and possibly also in other EU Member States.
\PROGRESS
AROUND THE GLOBE
THIS YEAR VS. FOSSIL FUELS (From 350.org)
14 November, Luxembourg – Today, the European
Investment Bank (EIB), the world’s largest international public bank and the
€555bn lending arm of the EU, adopted
a new lending policy that will cut finance to most fossil fuel projects as
it tries to become the
world’s first ‘climate bank’.
Some
countries including the German and Italian governments pushed for loopholes
that could allow for dangerous fossil gas projects to be supported by the bank
– campaigners will continue to fight against these.
Europe’s Gas Does Not Pass Three iconic fights against gas won big victories in
Europe this year. The MidCat pipeline between Spain and France, and Gothenburg
terminal in Sweden were both cancelled, while fracking was banned in the
UK. https://350.org/fossil-fuel-fights-in-europe-winning/?akid=110275.4287398.i8wIGb&rd=1&t=17
