LIB TALKS
**************************************************
**A NEW YEAR CAN BE A HEALTHIER ONE!
Despite the challenges we face from corporate
interests that generate toxins like rabbits produce
offspring (Apologies to the bunnies for the comparison),
we can move toward less-toxic lives. This TIP TALKS,
fortunately, gives several inspiring examples of what
can be done, even in our money-driven governmental
system. That, along with consumer education and the
tips we pass along all year about reducing toxic
exposure, offer hope for a better future!
**CHANGE IS ON THE MOVE! Note the Good News
in this month’s TT: The EPA finally saying no to the
Deadly Duo – the “Enlist” herbicide. Withstanding the
Monsanto push to control the world’s food system and
prevent GMO labeling. The success in court of at least
one local GMO ban in the U.S. (There are plenty more
in other places). The sparing of at least one athletic field
& the kids using it, from toxic artificial turf.
**WE HAVE THE POWER TO PROTECT OURSELVES
& THE PLANET! The Clever Consumers Campaign
continues with more resources and tips on how to avoid
the bad stuff and seek the good. See the resources
below
on which foods have the most & least pesticides – and
about
environmental chemicals that can impact reproductive
health.
**A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WANT TO BE PRESIDENT
– TELL THEM TO BE ON YOUR SIDE! This month’s action
alert gives you a chance to speak out to the candidates
about
fixing the food system. They need to know that this is
important
to those from whom they seek votes.
**TIP WANTS TO SERVE YOU, & SEEKS MORE
WAYS TO DO THAT. We are thinking to divide our mailing
i
n future months between those in the RI area and our
contacts
in other places. That way, we can be more helpful with
info about
local resources that provide healthful options. For
now, do go
to our “Thoughts on Less-Toxic Living” page, for those
local options
– and the many suggestions for actions and sources that are
useful
wherever you live. Check the many back issues of our
previous
“Healthy Holidays” guides – not just for special days.
Go to:
http://toxicsinfo.org/thoughts.htm
Finally, don’t forget that we need your help to keep up the
work we do. See our plea at the bottom of this page to
support our TIP efforts – especially the one that benefits
us at no cost to you while web browsing or shopping via
GoodSearch, GoodShop or IGive!).
Have a Happy & Healthy 2016!
Blessings, Liberty G

ACTION FOR THE NEW YEAR
**********************************************
TELL THE NEXT PRESIDENT
TO FIX
THE FOOD SYSTEM
A new poll released in October shows that Americans
get it: our food system is broken and needs to be fixed.
The vast majority of Americans from all political
stripes
are concerned that one-third of American children are
expected to develop type-2 diabetes and live shorter lives
than their parents. These developments are largely the
result of a food system that is out of balance, favoring the
production of junk food, degrading our natural resources,
and destroying the American dream for farmers and
food system workers.
It doesn't have to be this way. Today's food system was put
in
place and guarded by industry lobbyists who prioritize
profits
over the health of people and the environment. It's time to
demand leadership to counter special interests and fix our
food system. Tell the next president to put this issue
at the
top of the agenda and commit to fixing our food system.

VICTORY! EPA PULLS REGISTRATION FOR DOW’S
ENLIST DUO HERBICIDE CITING HIGH TOXICITY LEVELS
www.centerforfoodsafety.org/press-releases/4144/epa-pulls-registration-for-dows-enlist-duo-herbicide-citing-high-toxicity-levels#
November 25th, 2015 Washington D.C.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), responding
to litigation, has announced it is revoking the registration
of “Enlist Duo.” Approved by the agency just over a
year ago,
Enlist Duo is a toxic combination of glyphosate and 2,4-D
that Dow AgroSciences created for use on the next generation
of genetically engineered crops, designed to withstand being
drenched with this potent herbicide cocktail. In its
court filing,
EPA stated it is taking this action after realizing that the
combination of these chemicals is likely significantly more
harmful
than it had initially believed. This action resolves a
year-long legal
challenge filed by a coalition of conservation groups
seeking to
rescind the approval of the dangerous herbicide blend. EPA
had
approved use of Enlist Duo in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio,
South
Dakota, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota,
Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and North Dakota,
and had intended to approve it in additional areas in the
near future.

VICTORY! PUBLIC PRESSURE AND ALLIES
IN CONGRESS KEEP “RIDER” BLOCKING STATE LABELING
OF GMOS OUT OF SPENDING BILL
www.centerforfoodsafety.org/press-releases/4171/public-pressure-and-allies-in-congress-keep-rider-blocking-state-labeling-of-gmos-out-of-spending-bill
With your support and action, Center for Food Safety (CFS)
was
able to pressure Congress not to pass legislation that would
have
blocked states from implementing mandatory genetically
engineered
(GE) food labeling laws – a huge victory in 2015! Three
states,
Connecticut, Maine and Vermont, have passed such laws, with
Vermont’s slated be to be the first to go into effect in
July 2016.
All three democratically passed laws would have been
nullified,
while any future state GE labeling legislation would have
been
preempted. Over 30 states have introduced bills to labeling
GE
foods in just the past few years

EXPECTED SETTLEMENT WILL LEAVE JACKSON
COUNTY,
OREGON GE BAN IN EFFECT!
www.ourfamilyfarmscoalition.org/
12-8-15 Jackson County Board of Commissioners unanimously
agreed today to support the proposed settlement negotiated
by
OFFC & the Center for Food Safety with the two GE
alfalfa
growers that had sued to overturn Jackson County’s ban on
genetically engineered crops. Now it heads to federal
court
Magistrate Mark D. Clarke for his approval. The settlement
still
is expected to be approved by the County and federal
court..
Under its terms, the Jackson County ban passed by voters
will
stand and the federal court’s opinion upholding the measure
will
not be appealed! This will leave the will of Jackson
County voters
in place and protect family farmers growing traditional
crops from
contamination by genetically engineered crops. Also,
the two
growers will not proceed with their Constitutional takings
lawsuit
against the measure

GOV. RAUNER OF ILLINOIS BLOCKS $3M TO BE SPENT ON
NORTHWEST SIDE'S 1ST ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELD
www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20151217/dunning/rauner-blocks-3m-be-spent-on-northwest-sides-1st-artificial-turf-field
December 17, 2015 DUNNING - Plans to build a multi
sport
athletic field on long-vacant land in Dunning have fallen
victim to
the impasse over the state budget, officials said.
Although the
$3 million needed to build the synthetic field on what was
once
home to a mental hospital and long-forgotten cemetery was
approved by the General Assembly and signed into law, Gov.
Bruce Rauner's administration refuses to allow it to be
spent,
said state Sen. John Mulroe (D-Jefferson Park).
"It is frustrating,"
Mulroe said, adding that the project must now be approved
again
by legislators and the governor, sending the project that
has been
in the works for more than a decade back to square one.

FOOD TIPS FROM EWG
(Environmental Working Group)
As you prepare for your holiday
meals this year,
(and for the year ahead) here are two helpful
guides
to help with healthy choices.
Concerned about pesticides on fruits and veggies?
Use EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce
to avoid the Dirty Dozen – the non-organic fruits and
egetables that are highest in pesticide residues –
and choose items from the Clean Fifteen list instead.
www.ewg.org/foodnews/?inlist=Y
Turkeys are often fed antibiotics and growth promoters
in their feed to encourage development of lean muscle
instead of fat. (No wonder they look the way they do!)
Consider going organic and antibiotic-free this year and
check out our guide to decoding turkey labels to help
you choose a better bird.
