LIB TALKS
**THOUGHTS & INFO ON NEW CONCERNS
Vaccine Mandates: TIP has tried to avoid getting involved in
medical care matters & in general, focus on common sense
in approaching concerns rather than “battles of the scientists”.
Now, Rhode Island has instituted a mandate for all 7th graders
to be injected with the HPV vaccine. We do not proclaim an
“anti-vaccine” position. However, as with so many chemical
questions, we feel there are serious concerns & potential i
ndividual susceptibility to injury from this procedure. We believe
parents should have the right to decide what treatments are
applied to their kids. There are exemption forms, and
supposedly opting-out should be allowed. We’ll see.
Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs). Concerns also mount,
especially for youngsters, re: increasingly widespread exposure
to Wi-Fi and to “Smart Meters”. See info & tips below on the
problem and some ways to address it. Also, read my testimony
to GCD on the EMFs and to the RI DOH re: the vaccine mandate,at:

** NEW “COOL & CLEVER CONSUMERS CAMPAIGN”.
More and more, seeking legislative action, especially at the federal
level, has proved frustrating. I am thinking to focus our efforts
more on influencing those who profit from our choices at the
marketplace. The key, I believe, is to Let Them Know What We
Will Buy, Not Buy – and Why. It is as important to compliment them
when they do what’s right as to get them to stop poor behavior.
Example: I dined at a Chipotle restaurant for the first time recently
– and explained to the manager that I was there because of their
new Non-GMO policy! If they know sales will be affected, many
retailers & producers will listen! So in coming months, I’ll be seeking
to suggest ways to utilize this power that we do have as consumers!
Note the “Good News” item re: asbestos below. Stay tuned!

NEWS & ALERTS

BREAKING NEWS: ASBESTOS FOUND IN CHILDREN’S TOYS!
Lab Tests Confirm Deadly Carcinogen in Crayons, Kids’ Crime Scene
Fingerprint Kits. According to tests commissioned by EWG Action Fund,
samples of four brands of children’s crayons & two kids’ crime scene
fingerprint kits contain deadly asbestos fibers. In addition to Amscan
Crayons, most are sold under the names of children’s characters
including Disney Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Nickelodeon Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles and Saban’s Power Rangers Megaforce.
Asbestos was also found in the fingerprinting powder of two popular
kids’ crime scene kits, Edu Science Deluxe Forensics Lab Kit and
Inside Intelligence Secret Spy Kit. The test results make a scary
picture: a child exposed to asbestos is 3.5 more likely than a
25-year-old to develop mesothelioma, a lung disease that is only
caused by asbestos, according to the U.K. Committee on
Carcinogenicity

TELL MERLE NORMAN & MARY KAY – SUPPORT THE
PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS SAFETY ACT
Right now, cosmetics companies can put just about anything in their
products – even chemicals associated with cancer and endocrine
disruption. What goes on our skin is often absorbed into our bodies.
EWG's Teen Body Burden study found an average of 13 cosmetics
chemicals in the bodies of teenage girls. Among the suspect substances
were phthalates, triclosan and parabens -- all of which have been found
to alter the hormone system. Enough is enough! Sens. Diane Feinstein
(D-Calif.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) have introduced a bill that would
require cosmetics companies to prove that their products are safe before
marketing them. It would give the federal Food and Drug Administration
the power to review risky ingredients. While many cosmetics companies
support the bill, Merle Norman and Mary Kay haven’t stepped up yet!
EWG needs you to take action today and tell these companies to support
the Personal Care Products Safety Act.
