PERFUME ANALYSIS

Two
popular perfumes were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
Large numbers of terpenes, sequiterpenes, phenols, esters, aldehydes, and
benzene derivatives were found. At
least 80% of the fragrance formula is ethanol. The mass spectrometry of many of
these substances are very similar, so the identities are subject to error. For this reason the names of the fragrances
are not posted until identity of components can be verified.
Further
studies show the fragrances were designed to volatilize at skin temperature and
not room temperature. The lower molecular weight substances volatilized more
easily. At skin temperature the higher
molecular weight substances volatilized.
It was found that some substances such as diethyl phthalate required
temperatures even higher than skin temperature to volatilize. The fragrances are formulated to be very
long lasting.
It was
determined that fragranced products contribute to the composition of room
air. Many of the substances found in
these fragrances can contribute to indoor air pollution. Available data on the compounds were
examined. Many of these compounds are
air, light, and heat sensitive. They
can mix with other air contaminants and form new compounds.
The
lab performing the analysis has an online site. Within several weeks an article will be available from their site
detailing the analysis results. When it
is available a link will be provided to their site. There is the possibility of typographical errors. The user is responsible for verifying the
