My perennial garden is on the South facing (street name omitted) length of my house at (street name omitted). Over the years, since 1984, I have removed most of the grass which previously grew here and replaced it with perennial beds and shrubs. Three trees have also grown up – a pin oak, an apple tree and a beautiful mimosa tree. I try to have flowers that attract butterflies and insects such as Butterfly Bush, Echinacea and Monarda (Bee Balm) in three colors, red, pink and purple. I also intersperse herbs with annuals and the perennials.
The soil has been built up with compost made from fruit and vegetable remains from my kitchen along with oak and mimosa leaves, so it is extremely fertile. I spread the compost over the beds every spring.
