                                    LIB TALKS
**UPDATE ON GMO LABELING:  Welcome partners:
Sierra Club, Consumers Union, RI State Sen. Donna
Nesselbush.  Also, the RI Food Policy Council if joining the
discussion (though not yet taking a position). We will be
working this week to agree upon language for a RI bill to support.
**STATE OF THE UNION?  We are not cheered by conditions
at the federal level of our government these days, as corporate
interests continue their reign, regardless of the “party in power”.
The hope we see is basically in the ability of some states to take
positive action on behalf of their citizens:  Thank you, Vermont,
Connecticut & Maine for GMO Labeling legislation – and New
York for its fracking ban.  The other source of hope is in consumer
education and action – we have sometimes succeeded in banishing
toxic product ingredients and replacing them with healthier ones.
In 2015, let’s continue to work together on both these effective fronts
– and make sure that the Feds don’t stymie us with “preemption”!

DON’T LET THE “DARK ACT” STIFLE GMO LABELING
It is vital that we preserve the rights of states to require “right to
know” labeling of foods containing GMO ingredients.  This is
especially true because the FDA is under the thumb of  corporate
interests, including “Monsanto Mike” Taylor.  If Rep. Mike Pompeo
(R-Kan.) and Big Food Lobbyists get their way, no one will have
that right.  The Deny Americans the Right to Know – or DARK-
Act would prevent states from adopting GE labeling laws, undo
labeling laws that some have already enacted and make it harder
for the federal FDA to require mandatory national GE labeling
in the future.  Tell your representative to oppose the DARK
Act today - Click here to stand up for your right to know.
(Even if you’ve signed re: this before, it’s important to
continue making your voice heard.)

                                      RESOURCES
EWG’S DIRTY DOZEN GUIDE TO FOOD ADDITIVES
(From Environmental Working Group)  By some accounts, Americans
spend 90 percent of their food budget on processed foods, and almost
all of them contain substances that often have little or no nutritional
value but are added to make the food look or taste better. Today, more
than 10,000 additives are allowed in our food. And while not all are
bad, some have been linked to serious health problems, including
endocrine disruption and cancer.  EWG’s new guide covers food
additives associated with serious health concerns as well as some
that are banned or restricted in other countries. It also shines a
spotlight on some of the worst failures of the federal Food and Drug
Administration, underscoring the need for better oversight of the
food system.    You’ll be shocked to see some of the harmful
chemicals found in many everyday foods. Take propyl paraben,
for example. This endocrine-disrupting chemical can alter the
functioning of genes and has been reported to accelerate growth
of breast cancer cells. Yet it continues to be used as a preservative
in foods such as tortillas, muffins and food dyes!  Click here to
check out EWG’s Dirty Dozen Guide to Food Additives and
