  TIP TALKS NEWSLETTER, APRIL, 2012
It is the nature of our work that some of the same concerns –
and chemical villains – turn up again and again.  However,
new information is precious in helping us to educate both
other ordinary people and the decision makers who are now
failing to protect us.  Knowledge is power – and sometimes
what we avoid is as important as what we do in keeping us –
and our loved ones - healthy.

                    IN THIS ISSUE
*** AUTISM MONTH – Connections to chemical/dietary causes?
A Healthy Child Healthy World article, & a TIP response.
*** LABELING LIES – What’s in nail polish?
*** HUMOR – Pepsi Dead Mouse Defense
*** SCIENCE NEWS: Polluting Clothes Dryers?
$$$ GMO STORIES OF THE DAY – Powerful report from farmer,
Reuters takes notice, a deadly mix. (Note:  I accidentally
hit the dollar sign for this item, instead of stars – then
realized – isn’t that really more appropriate anyway?
It’s all about making money!

APRIL IS AUTISM MONTH: NEW STUDIES LOOK FOR CAUSES
www.healthychild.org/blog/comments/april_is_autism_month_new_studies_look_for_causes
Necessary News, 4-17-12, by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Exec. Director &
CEO, Healthy Child Healthy World.  On the heels of last week’s CDC
report that found higher rates of autism than ever before—now affecting
1 in 88 children and representing a 78% increase in the last 10 years—a
new study published last week in the journal Clinical Epigenetics is
especially interesting. The study looked at how substances such as high
fructose corn syrup can lead to mineral deficiencies, how deficiencies
in minerals such as zinc can reduce the body’s ability to eliminate
toxic substances such as mercury and pesticides, which have been linked
to autism.

WATCH FOR A NEW TIP FLYER & ADDED WEB INFO ON AUTISM
AND HOW AVOIDANCE OF TOXINS CAN HELP:
The month just vanishing was designated
“Autism Month” – and, a new study is just out, reporting a huge rise in
autism spectrum in the past decade..  Sadly, mostly clueless scientists
are “searching” for a cause with both eyes shut to the thousands of
toxic chemicals to which we are exposed every day.  TIP, however, with
eyes wide open, plans to give special attention to this concern in the
year upcoming.  We already have a great deal of information, both
research-generated and experiential, about the way common chemicals
may trigger symptoms of ADD/ADHD, etc.  Causes are more complex,
but usually involve a combination of factors that definitely includes
exposures to toxic products, along with genetic susceptibility & diet.

NAIL POLISH LABELING LIES: Pregnant moms should be especially conscious
of a new Department of Toxic Substances Control reporter published
last week that found nail polishes labeled as “big-three free” actually
contained high levels of chemicals toluene, formaldehyde and DBP which
have been linked to birth defects, asthma and other illnesses, according
to the Washington Post.  Yet another reason to support the Safe
Cosmetics Act, which would finally—finally!—establish regulation
for the currently self-regulating $50 billion personal care industry.

PEPSI SAYS MOUNTAIN DEW CAN DISSOLVE MOUSE CARCASSES
(TIP query - so what does it do to human tummies?)
Yahoo News, By Eric Randall | The Atlantic Wire – Mon, Jan 2, 2012
Pepsi Co., facing a lawsuit from a man who claims to have found
a mouse in his Mountain Dew can, has an especially creative, if
disgusting, defense: their soda would have dissolved a dead mouse
before the man could have found it. An Illinois man sued Pepsi in
2009 after he claims he "spat out  the soda to reveal a dead mouse,"
the Madison County Record reports. He claims he sent the mouse to
Pepsi, which then "destroyed" the remains after he allowed them to
test it, according to his complaint. ...Read the full story at:

SCENTED LAUNDRY PRODUCTS EMIT HAZARDOUS
        CHEMICALS THROUGH DRYER VENTS
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/08/110824091537.htm

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2011) — The same University of Washington
researcher who used chemical sleuthing to deduce what's in fragranced
consumer products now has turned her attention to the scented air
wafting from household laundry vents.  Findings, published online this
week in the journal Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health, show that air
vented from machines using the top-selling scented liquid laundry
detergent and scented dryer sheet contains hazardous chemicals,
including two that are classified as carcinogens.

"This is an interesting source of pollution because emissions from dryer
vents are essentially unregulated and unmonitored," said lead author
Anne Steinemann, a UW professor of civil and environmental engineering
and of public affairs. "If they're coming out of a smokestack or tail
pipe, they're regulated, but if they're coming out of a dryer vent,
they're not."  The research builds on earlier work that looked at what
chemicals are released by laundry products, air fresheners, cleaners,
lotions and other fragranced consumer products. Manufacturers are not
required to disclose the ingredients used in fragrances, or in laundry
products.

                    GMO STORIES OF THE DAY

AGENT ORANGE READY GMO CORN – POLLUTES PIGS – ARE WE NEXT?
Please, watch the video mentioned in the first paragraph below.
It is a chilling, real-life story from farmer Jerry Rosman
of what GMO corn (about to be approved for human consumption
by corporate controlled USDA) does to animals who have eaten it!
(Hint - reproductive calamity) Then, take a look at the second
story.. (That one has only one big flaw - it repeats industry's
lie about "testing" - refuted by Rosman in his video report).

*** Farmer Feeds Gmo Corn To His Pigs: They All Become Sterile.
The corn generally fed to breeding sows is probably NOT GMO, as
GMO feed makes animals sterile (and probably humans as well),
as can be seen in this mind-boggling report from livestock
farmer Jerry Rosman.  www.youtube.com/watch?v=eilDbdLAyFs

*** Protesters Urge U.S. To Scuttle Dow's New GMO Corn, 4-26-12
www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/26/usa-food-24-d-idUSL2E8FPILH20120426
Reuter's reports on some of the protest
stirred up by the EPA's probable approval of new GMO corn, soy and
cotton (developed using half of the Agent Orange herbicide formula),
which is "needed" to try and control the super-weeds created by
Monsanto's Roundup-ready (glyphosate) herbicide (sometimes by
mixing the two). The article does fail to mention the herbicide's
Agent Orange connection, or Dow Chemical's notorious past, but it
is a rare fair hearing in mainstream media for the growing voices
opposed to the GMO insanity.  Please give it a read.
