The TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2005,

SPECIAL FORUM ON THE CONCERNS

OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY

HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

(Asthma, Respiratory Disorders, Chemical Sensitivity, Neurological & Behavioral Conditions)

was the very first forum designed to provide testimony to the RI Governor’s Commission on Disabilities (GCD) on the concerns, problems and accessibility needs of Rhode Islanders.  This was the only forum focused specifically on household chemicals, including but not limited to pesticides, fragrance, cleaning products, new carpets and paint, non-stick coatings, etc.

For this forum, GCD was interested in any adverse reactions or health effects from such sources, whether experienced by you, a member of your family or other person you know.  People were especially invited to share any difficulties in utilizing public and medical services, through hospitals, schools, nursing homes, doctors’ offices, etc.  GCD also welcomed suggestions on realistic ways to address the problems, whether through legislation, regulation or education.

Because we turned out 20 canaries and allies at this hearing, and because of the well-written and deeply felt testimonies from all involved, eight GCD working groups will be meeting to discuss responses to the testimony that was gathered. For further information on these working groups, contact Liberty Goodwin at TIP or contact the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities (GCD), John O. Pastore Center, 41 Cherry Dale Court, Cranston, RI 02920-3049.  E-Mail:  disabilities@gcd.ri.gov, FAX:  401-462-0106.
